Our Comprehensive Eye Exam Includes

Overall Eye Health Exam

Each of our eye exams includes a general evaluation of the structures of your eyes, including your cornea, retina, optic nerve, and lens, to check for abnormalities.

Diabetic Eye Exams

We can assess your eyes for signs of diabetic complications, including diabetic retinopathy. For those with diabetes, you may need regular evaluations.

Glaucoma Testing

While not a diagnostic test, we will look for signs of glaucoma during our examination of your optic nerve. If we see signs of glaucoma, additional tests are recommended.

Cataract Evaluation

During your comprehensive eye exam, we will evaluate your lens health for signs of cataract formation. We can determine how advanced your condition is.

Additional Evaluations

In addition to testing for cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetes complications, we also test for signs of other eye conditions such as macular degeneration.

What to Expect From an Exam: Dilation

All comprehensive eye exams are conducted with dilation. What this means is that we will use special eye drops to increase the size of your pupil, allowing us to see more clearly into the back of your eye. You can think about it like the difference between trying to see through a keyhole versus trying to see through an open door. Pupil dilation allows us to check for issues such as retinal tears and retinal detachment, and check that your optic nerve is healthy, among other things. Without dilation, we cannot conduct a comprehensive exam.

Keep in mind that dilation will make your vision blurry, and you will not be able to drive following your appointment.

Additional Testing We Can Provide

If your comprehensive eye exam reveals signs that you may be suffering from a more serious eye condition, we may conduct additional testing, including:

Glaucoma Evaluations

If we determine that there are signs that you may have glaucoma, we will recommend that you undergo additional testing to confirm the diagnosis and assess your condition.

New Prescription Exams

A comprehensive vision test is only meant to provide a prescription. It does not exam the eye itself or its structures. We don’t offer this service on its own.

Macular Degeneration Evaluations

Through additional testing, we can evaluate and diagnose macular degeneration, a condition associated with damage to part of the retina.

Diabetic Retinopathy Exams

Those with diabetes may need to undergo regular eye exams for diabetic retinopathy. You may need an exam between once and three times per year.

Our Commitment to Your Health

Gelman Vision is a medical office first and foremost. When you come to our office, we care for your eye health as a whole, not in half measures. What that means is that all patients who come to our office for an exam, whether they want to check for cataracts or they just want a new prescription, will receive a comprehensive eye exam, including examinations of the eye’s health and structures. In other words, if your eye health is poor, we won’t send you off with just a prescription; we’ll provide the comprehensive care you need to protect your overall ocular health. This is especially important for elderly patients and patients with a family history of eye conditions.
At Gelman Vision, we don’t let anyone slip through the cracks when it comes to treatment. If you have an eye condition, we will determine what it is and get you the care you need. You can trust us with your protected health information, your vision, and your eye health.

Eye Exams Frequently Asked Questions

Our Texas office is proud to accept all major insurance providers. However, the best way to determine whether or not the service you’re hoping to get is covered by insurance is to contact your insurance provider directly.

Getting a comprehensive eye exam comes with many helpful benefits. For those with a family history of eye conditions, an exam can help catch problems early or give you peace of mind thanks to the knowledge that your eyes are in good health. For those with blurry vision, an exam can tell you what the problem is and how to fix it. For patients whose glasses have stopped effectively addressing their vision issues, an exam can provide a new prescription. You can enhance how you see the world with proper vision care and a visit to Gelman Vision.

If you’re finding yourself buying a second pair of glasses to make up for the inadequacies of your original pair, it’s time for a new script. Also, if your glasses are simply not providing the same level of vision clarity as they once did, your prescription may have changed. Plus, it’s generally recommended that you undergo testing to check your prescription every one to two years, whether or not you’re experiencing vision issues.

If you’re looking for a great place to get eye care in the Rio Grande Valley, our knowledgeable and attentive staff are ready to welcome you to our office. We work to ensure that every patient has a good experience in our clinic, and we are ready to go above and beyond for your eye health.
